how do i make a gradient on adobe photoshop cs?

under a layer (not over it) without trying to cover the image with the gradient color picked.. im using adobe photoshop cs on via mac. thanks.

2. select the image, invert the selection, use the gradient tool. you'll get a gradient all over the layer but not on your image. is that what you want?
